“Aaron Anderson AKA Breakself, aside from being a stand up guy, is also one part of The Ann Arbor Soul Club along with Robert Wells, Brad Hales and Breck T. Bunce. Their night runs the first Friday of every month at The Blind Pig, and these guys SERIOUSLY know how to throw a party! I’ve been trying to pin Aaron down for a guest mix ever since I had the pleasure of DJing at Bump & Hustle with him last year and with his schedule finally permitting he has come through with a blistering Gospel Funk mix for you! Inspired by the Numero Compilation ‘Good God! Born Again Funk’ which you can check out HERE, this is a mixture of 45s as well as some rarer LP cuts that’s sure to get your week off to a good start!
Ladies and gentlemen give it up for Aaron Anderson…..”

We began this project quite some time ago, Aaron (aka Breakself) had been diagnosed with brain cancer while in school at Stanford and he began to bring records over to my house to record...it seemed endless the amount of ridiculously dope, and rare records he had; the “student” truly has become my teacher, and for that I am grateful...I have learned so much from him, and continue to learn more every time I speak with him. I (Deejay OM), did all the mixing and only supplied a couple of the records, my intent was to show our relationship through music, and I hope that you too can appreciate and enjoy the aptly titled “The Buddy System.”

“I cannot even tell you how lucky I am to have had this great friend in my life, and how much fun we had driving to NYC, drinking beer and playing these records at the late great Bump Shop NYC party at APT where fizzy water was like 20 bucks, WTF. Such a good time with Asaf Segal, Matt Weingarden, Chariman Jefferson Mao, James and Robert Wells, Zac Davis, Jared, Nydia, Chris, Amarilla Sanders, Liz Clayton, many others... this shit was so fun, though. No rhyme or reason to our set either, but I do remember lots of dancing and yelling.”

“This was something I dropped off at Good Records during a trip to NY in the Fall of 2006. This was before my first semester of grad school, and, therefore, before I lost my motivation to do anything. I think it's pretty clear that there was no type of conceptual arc guiding the track selection - I just felt like sharing a few things I was feeling at the time. All but four tracks came from my collection - "Thoughs Were the Days", for instance, was actually a rip from SoulHawk, Chairman of the Bureau of Better Digging Standards & Practices. In all honesty, when JP asked me if he could host the mix, I had no idea what tracks were on it. Records Are People Too is like the generic name of pretty much every random mix I hand out. Listening to the songs now...Wow! Some of these rips are awful. No type of volume consistency either - sounds like I'm switching b/w ESPN and BET every other song. Most of the tracks are pretty rare I guess, especially if you live outside of Detroit.”
